Another Edition of Game Plan Progress

Welcome to another edition of GAME plan progress. My first goal is to demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills (http://www.iste.org/Libraries/PDFs/NETS_for_Teachers_2000.sflb.ashx). I did not experience much progress this week. I have not yet implemented new learning from my technology forum. However, I do intend to after the holiday break. I am attending professional development training this week relating to our district’s online curriculum. In addition, I am learning more skills through Walden coursework.

My second goal is to better design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology (http://www.iste.org/Libraries/PDFs/NETS_for_Teachers_2000.sflb.ashx). I am modifying my use of the Jason Project to enhance learners focus on required content. In addition, my grade level is going to encourage use of technology for a writing project, both as a research tool and a production tool. We have not tried something like this since I started working at my school. In the past, writing has been assigned through prompts and completed in an afternoon of brainstorming, creating rough drafts, and hopefully a final copy with correct edits.

I have no intention of changing my learning goals at this time. I consider my goals to be long term, rather than short term. I will extend my knowledge by continuing my education, learning from my network of classmates and peers, and improving my performance in the classroom.

  1. I feel that with the time we have been given to design and implement our GAME plans, you have taken great steps ro carry out your goal to continually grow in your knowledge of technology skills. Hopefully your upcoming training will provide you with more information to be able to integrate technology specifically in your classroom. Although there are many tools we are learning to use through Walden, each school district has set ways that they would like their students to use technology.

I love the idea of having your students research and produce their writinig using technology. This will serve as a great opportunity to introduce 21st century literacy skills to your students. I am sure that they will also find the ease of editing and revising their work using grammar tools in word processing programs very helpful. Maybe your students could also e-mail their papers to each other to have their peers review their work. It sounds like you are doing a great job carrying out your professional goals!

  2. Ken,

I have read through many of our classmates' blogs this week. Numerous blog posts speak to the issue of long term goals. I believe this to be the wise approach. I am not sure a teacher can set a goal and be 100% confident that the goal has been reached in a matter of days. My feeling is that the NETS-T goals are ones that need to be implemented over the long haul.
Teachers want to be good at what they do and offer the best for their students. In my case, and in many other cases, the Walden program will mean changes in our teaching. Effective change takes time.

I am glad you can get the cooperation necessary to do a grade level cooperative writing assignment. I think my cohorts would not be interested in such an endeavour. It would seem your approach and leadership is paying off in your school and amongst your colleagues. Well done.

  3. Tiffany and Rusty,

Thank you both for the supportive comments. My learning is having an affect on how my grade level approaches our curriculum. When I began this program only one other teacher would even bring in a lab cart (there are 6 teachers in my grade level). Now, my peers are asking me for ideas of how to integrate technology into their lessons. In addition, my colleagues are now sharing digital resources with me, and each other. We have not completely changed how we operate, but we are moving into the twenty-first century. I hope we are becoming a little more effective. Have a great weekend!
